SGPGIMS Hosts Programme on Workplace Ethics
Lucknow: A special programme aimed at enhancing patient services and improving workplace ethics was held on Saturday at the Dr. Har Gobind Khorana Auditorium Lecture Theatre of SGPGIMS. The session brought together receptionists, junior reception officers, public relations officers, medical social workers, and nursing staff from the institute.
Chief Medical Superintendent Prof. Devendra Gupta emphasised the importance of understanding patients’ perspectives and emotions. He said that healthcare providers must make every effort to support patients sensitively and effectively. Highlighting the objective of such training sessions, he said, “These programmes are meant to develop good communication skills and should be conducted at regular intervals.”
Medical Superintendent Prof. R. Harshvardhan, addressing the gathering, stressed the critical role of non-verbal communication in hospital settings. “Words are only one medium of expression. How we communicate is far more important,” he noted. He urged hospital staff to remain calm, composed, and emotionally balanced while interacting with patients and their attendants. He also underlined the importance of learning the art of listening.

Prof. Mukul Srivastava from the Department of Mass Communication & Journalism, Lucknow University, delivered the guest lecture, focusing on workplace ethics in hospitals. He highlighted the significance of discipline, time management, and behavioural skills in improving outcomes and building an organisation’s reputation. “A satisfied patient is equal to a thousand advertisements,” he remarked.
He further explained that patient respect must remain paramount and should be protected at all costs. He said that the first point of contact between a patient and hospital staff acts like a “shock observer” and must be empathetic and attentive.
The programme concluded with an open house session. Hundreds of attendees participated, making the event both insightful and impactful.
